Rare Sumatran Rhino captured for breeding program PDF Print E-mail

Malaysian wildlife authorities say the capture of a young Borneo Sumatran rhino gives them a last chance to save the highly endangered species from extinction.

The female rhino, aged between 10 and 12, was caught on December 18 and is being kept in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah on the Malaysian area of Borneo island.

It is hoped it will breed with a lone captive male.

The Netherlands is to press the European Commission for the abolition of the EU import levies on sustainably produced crude palm oil, Economic Affairs Minister Maxime Verhagen has said.

Palm Oil and poor old Buck PDF Print E-mail

Let me start with a short story of how my Aunt Eva got my goat. As a kid I owned a pretty white goat whom I fondly named Buck. Buck, believe it or not, was so big that I could ride him, which I often did. I grew to really love my magnificent white goat. Aunt Eva, on the other hand, never really got attached to Buck like I did. One day when our azalea bushes and magnificent bridal wreath spirea were in full bloom, both prized by Aunt Eva almost as much as she prized anything, Buck had a hunger pang. He proceeded to eat all of those azaleas along with the spirea next to them. Once discovered, Buck was history. The last time I saw Buck, he was in the back of a trailer headed to who-knows-where. Buck was a fine animal other than that episode, and I thought he was a pretty good goat. But on that fateful day, Aunt Eva declared that Buck was "good for nothing."

That unfortunately is the hand that is also dealt palm oil just because of the inappropriate actions of a few bad apples.
