Deforestation Watch aka Melbourne Zoo Watch is pleased to reproduce in full and unabrdiged form the letter dated 4th October 2011 from Linda Everett, Editor of Palmhugger.org and published in Free Malaysia Today.
I refer to the letter, “Glove comes off on Palm oil” written by Shenaaz Khan, the president of the Malaysian Animal Welfare Society.
It was Daniel J Boorstin, winner of the 1974 Pulitzer Prize in History who famously wrote: “The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance – it is the illusion of knowledge!”
What an apt description of this spiteful, malevolent and hateful rant by the president of the Malaysian Animal Welfare Society.
At the risk of sounding facetious, how can the Melbourne Zoo’s hypocritical “Don’t Palm Us Off” campaign even be defended by anyone, especially by the president of an Animal Welfare Society? The orangutan is a free ranging tropical animal and has no business sitting as an exhibit in a zoo, especially one located in a country with severe winters!
For Melbourne Zoo, the ultimate exploiter of animals, to feign concern for the “plight” of the orangutan is laughable. The real reason for the zoo’s sudden concern for the orangutan and the cynical organisation of the anti palm oil campaign is obvious – it brings in donors and cold hard cash! Sure enough, in recent days, Orange Power has pledged A$150,000 to help fund the zoo’s “Don’t Palm Us Off” campaign. |

As a strapping 15 year old, Kevin Baugh and a teenage friend decided in 1977 to create their own kingdom, just for the heck of it. Calling their kingdom, The Republic of Molossia, Baugh and friend designed a royal crest and national flag, printed paper money and drew up a map showing the 1.3 acre territory set in the Nevada desert covered by their “kingdom”.
When reporter Coleen Mastony toured his “nation”, Baugh assured her that he still pays taxes…what he calls “foreign aid”. “It’s always tongue in cheek,” King Baugh admits. “I’m doing this for fun and for the pleasure of owning my own country.”
When we examine the Melbourne Zoo, and in particular the zoo’s Director of Conservation, Rachel Lowry, we can see that there is nothing innocent or harmless in their “Don’t Palm Us Off” campaign against palm oil. Rather, what is clear is a deadly form of brinkmanship in which the livelihoods of millions of palm oil smallholders in Indonesia and Malaysia are regarded as mere collateral damage and count for nothing in their diabolical and cynical game of “fill the coffers!”

Former US Undersecretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs under President Clinton wrote a rather succint and incisive commentary on the passage of the Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labeling - Palm Oil) Bill. Says Dr Shapiro: "A POTENTIAL new impediment to the continued economic growth of Malaysia has arisen recently in Australia, a major trade partner. New legislation has been proposed there that would single out palm oil for special food labelling, alone among all of the various types of vegetable oils."
"Moreover, this special labelling would be imposed in the context of a current public relations campaign in Australia charging that consumption of Malaysian palm oil by Australians endangers the global environment and the preservation of the orang utan. This effort is badly misinformed and dangerous to the Malaysian economy," he continues.
